My suspission is that because we run on 4 stepper outputs, the 5th coil runs on a logic output this might be the problem.
I suspect that because we run on 4 stepper outputs, the 5th coil runs on a logic output this might be the problem.

The VAG 115F should work without problems on both stepper and logic out outputs but when using logic out make sure you have applied the double 510 ohm resistor series (resulting in ~255 ohm resistance between hc259 and logic output pin). Should be standard on all v3.8, some earlier boards might need manual application of the second 510r resistors to logic out channels (from rescuekit (marked 510 or 5100)).

Best regards, Dave
* for logic ignout, 255 Ohm should be standard on all v3.8

** some earlier boards might need manual application of the second 510r resistors to logic out channels (from rescuekit (marked 510 or 5100)).

** with ECU powered, the logic ignout pulls to GND (as a verification: -5V can be measured with 5V as a base).

** No need to disassemble ECU to know the logiclevel ignout installed output resistance: It is recommended to measure voltage (from GND as a base) with a 2k7 pullup to +5V:

** 5/(2700 / 255 +1) = 0.43 V measured (appr.) if 255 Ohm internal

** 5/(2700 / 510 +1) = 0.8 V measured (appr.) if 510 Ohm internal

** 5V / (Rpullup / Rinternaltognd + 1) = measured Voltage is the generic formula

** take note of the measurement.
